Move to enhance Sarawak-UNDP ties in climate action

KUCHING: Sarawak and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are looking to strengthen cooperation in climate action, energy transition and green economic development.

The areas of cooperation were discussed during a courtesy call by UNDP resident representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Edward Mario Vrkic on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Monday (Aug 17).

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), discussions covered opportunities to accelerate the state’s sustainable energy transition and strengthen its climate and environmental resilience.

Both sides also explored ways to promote green economic development through innovative solutions and the sharing of expertise.

“UNDP expressed its readiness to support Sarawak’s development aspirations through knowledge sharing, innovation and cooperation networks at the national, regional and international levels.

“The cooperation would also support Sarawak’s efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pursuing inclusive and sustainable growth,” UKAS reported.

The meeting was held at Satria Pertiwi Complex here.

Also present were UNDP deputy resident representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Besian Xhezo, Sarawak regional director of the Foreign Ministry Hendy Assan, Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Abg Ahmad Abg Morni and state Economic Planning Unit director Datuk Awg Mohammad Fadillah Awg Redzuan.
