KUCHING: Nearly 100 participants from Malaysia and seven other countries are expected to gather here for the 10th International Conference on Communication and Media (i-COME’26) next month.

Organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC), it will be held at the Borneo Cultures Museum from Sept 11 to 12.

SMMTC dean Associate Professor Dr Mohd Khairi Ahmad said the conference would bring together academics, media practitioners, government agencies, non-governmental organisations and industry players to exchange views on developments in communication and media.

“It not only provides a space for discussion but also encourages connections among all parties to create synergy and contribute ideas towards the formulation of policies related to communication and media,” he said in a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).

He was speaking during an interview on UKAS’ Juh Randau programme on Monday (Aug 17).

Mohd Khairi said the Borneo Cultures Museum was chosen as the venue to give international participants an opportunity to experience Sarawak’s heritage and identity.

Meanwhile, SMMTC deputy dean Associate Professor Dr Romlah Ramli said the conference would feature paper presentations, keynote sessions and workshops on digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

“Among the activities are introductory data analytics and academic publishing workshops, as well as discussions on the use of AI in communication and crisis management,” she said.

She said the theme, ‘Navigating Global Communication through Digital Competence for a Sustainable Future’, reflected the importance of digital competency in responding to current global communication challenges.
