BAU: AirBorneo will adopt its own business model aimed at maintaining competitive ticket prices while improving connectivity for the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that air travel costs have become increasingly burdensome, with return flights between Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur sometimes exceeding RM2,000.

Acknowledging public concerns over rising airfares, the Premier assured Sarawakians that the state government has devised a unique operating model for AirBorneo that would help keep ticket prices under control.

“On this matter, I already have my own model in mind, which I will share in due course. We will ensure that ticket prices are carefully managed,” he said at the launch of the Bidayuh Cultural Centre here today (June 22).

Abang Johari revealed that AirBorneo is currently undergoing a transition process and that details of the state’s aviation strategy would only be announced once Sarawak has full control of the airline and its operations.

“Once we have complete control and have fully implemented our own model, things will be different,” he said, adding that he preferred not to disclose details at this stage to avoid unnecessary reactions from industry players.

He said the model was designed to ensure AirBorneo remains competitive while providing greater convenience for tourists visiting Sarawak and Sarawakians travelling abroad.

He described the airline as a critical component of the state’s infrastructure development agenda.

“In addition to bridges and roads, we also want to create an air bridge,” he said.

According to Abang Johari, enhanced air connectivity would strengthen tourism, stimulate the creative industry and support broader economic growth across Sarawak, positioning the state as a more accessible destination for business and leisure travellers.

He noted that AirBorneo requires substantial capital, but the state government was doing this for the long-term benefit of Sarawak.

“The state’s move into the aviation sector was a long-term investment that would benefit Sarawak’s economy and people,” he added.
