KUCHING: Bako National Park and Bukit Lambir National Park have been nominated as ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP), signalling another step forward in Sarawak’s push for global recognition of its natural treasures.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the nomination was evaluated by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) from May 6 to 13 this year.

“The results are expected in September, and we are hopeful of positive news,” he said in his speech read by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, during the ministry’s Integrity Day at Sheraton Hotel here today.

He said the nomination, if successful, would not only elevate Sarawak’s reputation in biodiversity conservation but also enhance eco-tourism opportunities in the state.

Awang Tengah pointed out that the development follows Sarawak’s landmark achievement last year when Niah National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

He said the state is also eyeing another major milestone – UNESCO Global Geopark recognition for the Sarawak Delta Geopark by 2026.

The site was evaluated by UNESCO experts in June, and the state government is optimistic about securing the recognition through strong partnerships with local communities, schools, and higher learning institutions.

“These recognitions are not just about preserving nature. They also diversify economic activities and boost local incomes, especially in eco-tourism,” he stressed.

Awang Tengah added that Sarawak is preparing management plans for its Totally Protected Areas (TPAs), with four already completed including Bako and Lambir Hills.

Several more plans, such as those for Limbang Mangrove National Park, Loagan Bunut National Park and Gunung Gading National Park, are currently in progress.

He further emphasised that the state government is committed to reviewing and strengthening environmental laws to ensure they remain relevant and enforceable.

“We are also exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance governance in managing natural resources and driving sustainable development,” he said.

“These initiatives underline our principle of ‘Green Integrity’, where economic, social and environmental progress move forward in balance.”
