KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Lun Bawang community has been urged to preserve its cultural and spiritual heritage as part of efforts to ensure its continuity for future generations.

Ba’kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian said Lun Bawang customs and culture are invaluable and must be safeguarded, especially among the younger generation.

Baru speaks during the Lun Bawang Cultural Night at Samarahan Country Club.

He stressed that younger members of the community must understand and appreciate the values and practices that shape the Lun Bawang identity.

“Our customs are an invaluable heritage. It is the responsibility of the present generation to ensure that knowledge and love for our culture are passed down to the younger generation.

“Our younger members of the community must understand and appreciate the values and practices that shape the Lun Bawang identity,” he said while speaking at the Lun Bawang Cultural Night 2026 at Samarahan Country Club here last night (May 1).

In today’s rapidly developing and urbanised world, he said it is crucial for the community to continue showcasing its culture so that it can be recognised and appreciated by the wider society.

Baru also thanked community leaders for allowing the event to be held in Kuching, noting that it provided an opportunity to introduce the uniqueness of Lun Bawang culture to non-members of the community.

“This gathering was not only a celebration of culture but also an opportunity to strengthen bonds within the small yet unique Lun Bawang community, which is estimated to number about 30,000 people in Sarawak based on earlier statistics,” he said.

Highlighting cultural elements, he pointed to the variety of traditional food presented during the event and encouraged further efforts to expand such offerings.

Baru also spoke on the significance of the Bamboo Band, describing it as not only part of tradition but also a symbol of identity.

“Although it originated from Indonesia, we have adopted it as part of our culture.

“It is unique, and I have been fortunate to play the instrument since the age of 10, including the bamboo instruments and the flute,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of passing on musical knowledge and skills to younger generations, noting that music serves as a medium to convey stories and preserve the soul of the community.

During the event, Baru also officiated the date for Irau Aco, a traditional Lun Bawang festival which has been held yearly in the month of June with various cultural and sports activities.

This year, Irau Aco Lun Bawang will be held from July 2 to 5 at the Lawas Indoor Stadium.
