PADAWAN: The Sarawak government, through the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), will continue supporting the development of churches and other houses of worship across the state.
Deputy Minister for Transport (Aviation and Roads) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said such support is important to ensure the development needs of houses of worship serving Sarawak’s diverse communities continue to receive due attention.
Dr Jerip said the construction of the new St Gregory Church in Giam was made possible through close cooperation between the church and the local community, coupled with the allocation provided.
“UNIFOR not only assists in the development of churches and houses of worship of other religions, but also plays a role in helping mission schools in Sarawak,” he said when officiating at the opening of the new church building and the St Gregory’s Day celebration here recently.
Dr Jerip, who is also Mambong assemblyman, said that churches should continue to submit their outstanding development needs to UNIFOR for further consideration.
He said UNIFOR also monitor the use of allocations to ensure development funds were utilised appropriately.
Meanwhile, he said that the role of churches extended beyond religious matters to community development and education, particularly through the presence of mission schools in the Mambong constituency.
