MIRI: Earth-filling and site preparation works for the RM25 million Miri Lorry Terminal have reached 70 per cent completion.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the remaining earthworks, including surcharge works and the required settlement period for the filled ground, are scheduled for completion by the end of March next year.
During a working visit to the terminal construction site here today (Sept 7), Lee also heard concerns from the Miri Lorry Association over the need for a more suitable and accessible entry route for lorries arriving from the north, including Brunei, Limbang, Lawas and Sabah.
He said the matter needed to be resolved early as heavy vehicles would have to use part of the Pan Borneo Highway before entering the terminal.
“Proper access is important to ensure smooth traffic flow, road safety and efficient movement of heavy vehicles,” he said.
Lee has since instructed his ministry to hold a coordination meeting involving the Land and Survey Department (JTS), Public Works Department (PWD), Miri City Council, Miri Lorry Association, Royal Malaysia Police, Road Transport Department (JPJ) and relevant agencies to determine the most suitable and practical access arrangement.
He said the Miri Lorry Terminal would be an important infrastructure for the logistics network in Miri and northern Sarawak, providing parking, rest and accommodation facilities for long-haul lorry drivers.
The terminal will also include warehousing, cargo handling, vehicle maintenance and other supporting facilities.
“We will continue to work closely with industry players and relevant agencies to ensure the terminal is developed safely and efficiently, while meeting the actual needs of logistics operators.
“An orderly lorry terminal means safer roads, better facilities for drivers and a more efficient logistics network for Miri and northern Sarawak,” he said.
