KUCHING: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has consented to the termination of the emergency declaration for the entire Serian Division following an improvement in air quality.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, the decision was made after taking into account the advice of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the views of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

It also considered reports from relevant agencies showing that the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Serian was no longer at hazardous levels.

However, the PMO said haze conditions in Sarawak have yet to fully recover, with API readings in several areas, particularly Serian and Samarahan, still at very unhealthy levels.

“The federal government and Sarawak government will continue to closely monitor the situation.

“Residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and continue to comply with instructions issued by the authorities,” it said in the statement. The emergency in Serian was declared last Friday following severe haze conditions in the division.
