KUCHING: The Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) has raised concern over the potential impact on athletes and preparations should the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 be postponed.
SCA President, Irawan Sudarsono, said SUKMA acts as an important platform for young athletes, and any delay would affect their development and plannings.
“For many rising talents, SUKMA is more than a tournament; it is a target, a proving ground and often the first real glimpse of higher-level competition.
“In that light, the recent reports of a possible postponement are matters we are watching closely,” he said.
Irawan added that for cycling, preparation is built over long-term training cycles, with coaches planning progress months, sometimes years, in advance.
“Preparation does not happen overnight. Athletes train through long cycles, while coaches map progress over time.
“Shift the date, and many moving parts, from selection plans to competition schedules will shift with it,” he added.
He said young athletes risk losing momentum at crucial stages of their development, while associations could face additional costs due to extended training programmes and operational commitments.
Despite the uncertainty, he said SCA will continue to adapt while safeguarding athlete welfare and preparation.
He also urged that any final decision be communicated clearly and as early as possible to minimise disruption to all parties involved.
The matter follows ongoing discussions on the possible postponement of SUKMA 2026 amid wider concerns, including regional developments and venue readiness.
