FORMER ‘Superman’ actor Dean Cain has come under fire from ‘Supergirl’ fans after making a social media comment about actress Milly Alcock, who stars as the titular heroine in DC Studios’ upcoming ‘Supergirl’ film.
The exchange comes just weeks before ‘Supergirl’ is scheduled to open in cinemas across the United States.
Cain, best known for portraying Clark Kent/ Superman in the television series ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ from 1993 to 1997, has frequently attracted attention for his outspoken political views.
Earlier this year, some of his remarks criticising James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ as “woke” went viral following the film’s release.
The latest controversy began when Cain responded to an image on X, formerly Twitter, comparing Alcock’s version of ‘Supergirl’ to Cha-Ka, a character from the classic television series ‘Land of the Lost’. “Dang it… I laughed,” Cain wrote, alongside a laughing emoji.
The comment quickly drew criticism from DC and ‘Supergirl’ fans, many of whom accused the former Superman actor of unfairly mocking a young actress ahead of her first solo outing as the iconic superhero.
While reactions varied in tone, many argued that Cain’s remarks were unnecessary and disappointing.
Alcock’s ‘Supergirl’ is set to arrive in cinemas and IMAX on June 26. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, David Corenswet as Superman and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
According to the film’s synopsis, Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic interstellar journey of vengeance and justice after a ruthless enemy strikes close to home.
The film is produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and is based on DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
