SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has temporarily closed the Delta Swimming Pool to the public with immediate effect due to worsening haze and deteriorating air quality.
In a statement today, the council said all swimming activities at the facility would cease until further notice as a precautionary measure to safeguard the health and safety of swimmers, trainees, staff and members of the public.
The suspension covers early morning swimming, swimming training, evening swimming and public swimming sessions.
SMC said the temporary closure was implemented in consideration of prevailing Air Pollutant Index (API) readings and relevant guidance issued by the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) and the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS).
The swimming pool will reopen and resume normal operations once the API reading falls below 200 and air quality conditions are deemed suitable and safe for swimming activities.
The council apologised for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and thanked members of the public for their understanding, cooperation and patience.
