KUCHING: An e-hailing rider who robbed his mother of gold jewellery to fund his shopping was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today (Sept 1).
Judge Musli Ab Hamid handed down the sentence to 26-year-old Stanley Wong after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code.
The section provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years, or whipping, or both, upon conviction.
The court heard that Wong committed the offence at a house near Kampung Stutong Baru at about 10.20am on Aug 27, where he robbed his 45-year-old mother of gold jewellery worth about RM1,000.
According to the facts of the case, Wong’s mother was sitting in the living room when he approached her from behind, snatched the jewellery and fled the house with it.
At the time of the incident, the victim was with her 14-year-old daughter, who witnessed the incident.
Investigations revealed that Wong admitted committing the offence while under the influence of drugs.
He was arrested three hours after his mother lodged a police report on the same day.
Wong also admitted to selling the stolen jewellery at a jewellery shop near Jalan Court House here.
The court was also informed that Wong had six previous criminal records.
In mitigation, Wong, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he committed the offence because he needed money for shopping.
The case was investigated by Inspector Delvin Goh Dzul. The accused was unrepresented throughout the court proceedings.
