KUCHING: Two local men with clean criminal records found themselves in handcuffs after a drug raid in Kampung Rampangi uncovered suspected methamphetamine on Sunday (Jun 28).

Police seized a plastic packet containing 5.20g of crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of RM572.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspects, aged 36 and 39, were picked up by a team from the district Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) at around 3.45pm.

“Preliminary urine tests found both of them positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, while background checks revealed that they had no prior criminal records.

“The duo have been remanded for two days, from Jun 30 until Jul 1, to facilitate investigations,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries up to five years’ imprisonment and up to nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Alexson said the successful operation was the result of continuous intelligence gathering and information provided by members of the public.

He assured that police would not compromise with anyone involved in drug trafficking as possessing, distributing or shielding drug-related activities are serious offences under the law.

Those with information on drug-related activities are urged to contact Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-2087222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-5929211.
