MIRI: Firefighters contained a scrub fire within two hours on Monday night (Apr 20), preventing it from spreading in dry conditions that can accelerate vegetation fires.

The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 8.02pm, reporting a blaze at Lot 7796 along Jalan Lautan 7, about nine kilometres from the station.

A response team was deployed immediately, arriving at the scene at 8.11pm.

On arrival, the firefighters confirmed a bush fire covering an estimated 0.05 hectares. A five-member team carried out suppression operations using a hose line and manual fire beaters to contain the flames.

The fire was brought under control by 8.40pm, less than 30 minutes after operations began.

Firefighters remained at the scene to conduct overhaul work and ensure there was no risk of reignition before concluding operations at 10.18pm.

No injuries or property damage were reported, and no other agencies were involved.

The cause of the fire has not been established.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid open burning, particularly during dry weather, warning that even small fires can spread rapidly if left unchecked.
