KUCHING: Five Sarawak Metro employees are undergoing specialised training in China ahead of the KUTS project’s operational phase.
The four engineers and one executive left for Changsha, Hunan Province, on July 6 for a month-long industrial attachment at CRRC Times Hunan, Signal & Communication Co Ltd.
The attachment, which runs until August 7, is being conducted under Sarawak Metro’s Socio-Economic Enhancement Development (SEED) Programme.
Sarawak Metro’s Chief Executive Officer, Mazli Mustaffa, said the programme would provide the employees with first-hand experience and specialised knowledge in signalling and control systems.
“These young engineers will be responsible for managing the signalling and control systems when the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project enters its operational phase in the near future,” he said.
He said the attachment would also allow the participants to learn directly from the manufacturer and Sarawak Metro’s foreign partners.
“As with the previous industrial attachments, this latest one will offer good exposure for them to learn directly from the manufacturer and our foreign partners,” he said.
The programme provides hands-on experience, strengthens participants’ technical competencies, and deepens their understanding of engineering workflows, including documentation and quality assurance practices.
The participants are system engineer, Nur Nafisa Abdullah; project engineer, Syammil Mohd Ishak; project engineer for signalling, train control and automatic platform gates, Farid Hamizan Roslan; Operations Control Centre executive, Mohamad Ariffin Mohamad Ali Rahman; and signalling and communications system engineer, Afiqah Mohammed Yunus.
Sarawak Metro’s previous industrial attachment was held in April and May, when participants spent a month at Sichuan CRRC SDIG Rail Transit Co Ltd’s plant in Yibin, Sichuan Province.
Since the attachment initiative was introduced under the SEED Programme in 2022, several batches of employees and young talent have been sent to China.
Mazli also thanked EPR Mobilus GR JV Sdn Bhd, the System Package 1 contractor for the KUTS project, for its continued support in facilitating the attachments.
“The programme formed part of its efforts to transfer knowledge and technology to local talent and develop a skilled workforce for the public transport industry,” he said.
