KUCHING: Sarawak has set its sights on retaining the overall championship title at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 as preparations enter the final phase ahead of the national Games in Selangor.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the state’s final athlete shortlist is expected to be completed by the end of this month before preparations intensify in the lead-up to the Games.
“We want to be the champion again,” he said when asked about Sarawak’s expectations for SUKMA 2026.
Speaking to reporters after the welcoming dinner for the 3rd Asian Doubles Squash Championships on Wednesday, Gerald said preparations have progressed well and are now approaching a crucial stage.
He revealed that Sarawak’s contingent is expected to comprise 953 athletes competing in 37 sports, making logistics one of the state’s biggest challenges.
“One big issue that we have to face is the cost of travelling to Peninsular Malaysia because flight ticket prices have increased,” he said.
Gerald noted that the spread of competition venues across Selangor would also add to the logistical demands of managing such a large contingent.
“If we look at some of the venues, the travelling distance can be quite far. That is among the challenges that we need to address,” he said.
To ease the burden, he said discussions have been held on possible transportation arrangements, including potential cooperation with AirBorneo once operations commence.
Despite the challenges, Gerald expressed confidence in Sarawak’s preparations and said the state remains focused on mounting another strong challenge at the Games.
He added that following the completion of the athlete shortlist, preparations would move into the next phase, including centralised training and team-building programmes.
“We are really motivated to compete and I believe we will have a great campaign,” he said.
Sarawak emerged overall champion at the previous SUKMA and will be aiming to defend the title when the Games get underway in Selangor.
