KUCHING: More Dayak women have been encouraged to be caregivers for mothers in confinement after childbirth.

Women Empowerment and Sustainability Network Association, Kuching (Wesna) President Dr Carolina Sandra Giang said this is because some mothers need such services.

“Also, for others, they may not able to afford to go to the actual confinement centre,” she said, adding that confinement centres can be quite costly.

“There are individuals actually offering to take care of mothers after childbirth.

“But we find that very few Dayak women are involved in this, so we want to encourage more of them to get involved,” she said.

She said this in a press conference for the upcoming Women Entrepreneurship Conference (WEC) 2025 at Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry tower here today (Feb 10).

Carolina added that the caregiver services are among the options for Dayak women other than industries such as the arts and craft business.

Similarly, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that professional caregivers are the Ministry’s main focus last and this year.

She said this year, the Ministry is focusing on training around 400 caregivers.

“This is because the industry is really picking up, and we want to encourage more people to get involved, be it the caregivers for the children, mothers under confinement or even the elderly.

“We do not want people to look down upon those who work in this kind of industry. So we want to encourage them and assist them in providing a better brand for them,” she said.
