MIRI: A local fishing boat was stopped some 13.7 nautical miles off Kuala Suai by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Tuesday (Feb 23).

Miri MMEA director Capt (M) Md Fauzi Othman said a MMEA vessel stumbled upon the fishing boat while patrolling the area at 4.09pm during an ‘Ops Permai’ operation.

Upon inspection, three Indonesians were aboard and their work permits had expired.

“We also confiscated their catch comprising one tonne of fish. The boat was towed to the Miri MMEA jetty for further action,” Capt Fauzi said in a statement.

The case will be investigated under Section 8(B) of the Fisheries Act 1985 for employing illegal foreign workers.

Miri MMEA can be contacted at 085-418204, 082-432544 or 999.
