KUCHING: The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) will remain Sarawak’s main political priority regardless of who becomes prime minister after the next general election, says Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is prepared should early federal elections be called, stressing that Sarawak’s rights under MA63 would continue to take precedence over political uncertainties at the federal level.

“Whoever becomes the prime minister, MA63 is still our priority.

“Sarawakians want MA63 to be recognised and honoured. That is a very basic principle,” he told reporters during the Sarawak Inter-Division and Sarawak Closed Tennis Championship 2026 at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre here yesterday (May 24).

Henry said GPS would continue cooperating with whichever federal government is formed, provided Sarawak’s interests and constitutional rights are respected.

“We will work with the government to make sure Malaysia continues to be united, with a strong and stable government.

“But we also need to take care of our MA63 rights,” he said.

When asked whether GPS would once again support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the event of another hung parliament, Henry said the coalition would decide based on future circumstances.

“That one we will see when we cross the bridge. We cannot presume what will happen next,” he said.

Henry also noted that GPS elected representatives continuously engage with the people instead of operating only during campaign periods.

“We are not politicians by season.

“We work around the clock and continue going to the ground to take care of the people,” he added.

He said ongoing grassroots programmes, development projects and state assistance initiatives reflected GPS’ continuous engagement with the people across Sarawak.
