KUCHING: Anggun Handicraft and Souvenir, under the entrepreneurship of 69-year-old Julaihi Hassan, has successfully participated in the SAREF 4.0 exhibition, marking a significant milestone in its 17-year journey.
Originally starting as a business focused on creating wedding videos and live broadcasts, Julaihi’s company has since transformed into a well-established name in the local craft industry.
“We started with visuals and documentation, creating videos and wedding films, even live videos. Back then, LED screens weren’t common, so we used LCDs instead,” he said.
Julaihi shared his thoughts on the early days of the business to the Sarawak Tribune at Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 4.0) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday.

Over time, the business evolved, and today, Anggun Handicraft and Souvenir is known for its unique, handmade products such as keychains, pen holders, leather bracelets and locally crafted photo frames.
The company’s participation in SAREF 4.0 has proven to be a key moment for its growth.
He highlighted the importance of actively engaging customers.
“Sales today are going well, Alhamdulillah. But we do have to be proactive. We need to start the conversation with customers before they open their mouths. Like earlier, we showed them what we had to offer,
“At least we could showcase some of our items, and then we can introduce other products. It’s a process, but Alhamdulillah, it’s working,” he said.
While exact sales figures from the event were not disclosed, Julaihi emphasised that the exposure has been invaluable for the business.
“Events like SAREF 4.0 are not just about immediate sales; they help us build connections and promote our unique products,” he said.
The proactive approach of showcasing their offerings directly to customers has led to steady sales and increased recognition.
He also offers a local delicacy, Si’et Salai, which is smoked sago worms priced at RM30 per jar.
He said that its taste was “similar to prawn, but with a creamier and richer flavour.”
