MIRI: A local man has been arrested after allegedly trespassing into a telecommunications substation along the Miri-Bintulu road in Batu Niah last Friday night.

The incident is said to have occurred at about 8 pm on May 16 when the suspect allegedly cut through a wire fence to gain access to the restricted facility.

According to police, the intrusion was discovered by a worker who had arrived at the site to carry out a routine inspection.

The employee reportedly confronted and restrained the suspect before handing him over to the authorities.

A subsequent police inspection led to the discovery of a bolt cutter and a samurai sword believed to be in the suspect’s possession during the incident.

Officers also seized a motorcycle allegedly used by the suspect.

The man has been remanded for three days until May 20 to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass, an offence punishable by up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of RM3,000, or both upon conviction.

Police commended the swift action taken by the security personnel and site staff, saying their prompt response helped prevent a possible crime and ensured the suspect was apprehended without further incident.
