KUCHING: Mastery of robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies is no longer optional but essential for students to remain relevant in the future workforce.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said students without knowledge in these fields risked being left behind in a rapidly changing global economy.

“AI will definitely take over some jobs, but those without any knowledge of AI may not have jobs at all in the future.

“That is why activities like RoboClash Challenge are very important to prepare our young generation,” he said in a speech read out by his deputy, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, at the RoboClash Challenge 2025 held at Tegas Digital Village today.

Sagah said competitions such as RoboClash not only encourage students to apply their knowledge and creativity but also instil teamwork, problem-solving and innovative thinking.

He also commended the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), schools, industry players and academia in supporting such initiatives, noting that collaboration across sectors was crucial for talent development and digital empowerment.

“Running this kind of competition requires more than time and money it also takes passion.

“We truly appreciate the commitment shown by NGOs and partners in helping our youth embrace the latest technologies,” he said.

Sagah stressed that STEM education must be nurtured at an early age as it forms the foundation for innovation and technological progress.

“At the heart of this transformation is STEM education.

“It equips our young talents with innovative mindsets and problem-solving skills,” he said, quoting Albert Einstein: “Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think.”
