MIRI: A pre-dawn operation targeting illegal street racing in Miri turned confrontational when a young motorcyclist allegedly assaulted a police officer while attempting to evade inspection.
The incident occurred at about 2am on May 3 at a junction along Jalan Miri Bypass, where officers from the traffic investigation and enforcement division of the Royal Malaysia Police were conducting a compliance operation focusing on modified motorcycles and suspected racing activity.
Police said a 24-year-old man, travelling with a 16-year-old girl, was stopped for routine checks.
As officers moved in to inspect the motorcycle, the man allegedly became aggressive and attempted to flee, triggering a brief struggle.
One officer sustained minor injuries during the encounter but remained on duty until the operation concluded. He later sought treatment at Hospital Miri.
The suspect was detained at the scene. Officers seized a modified motorcycle believed to contravene regulations, along with a mobile phone that allegedly contained obscene video material.
Investigators are pursuing the case under Section 353 of the Penal Code, which covers the use of criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out lawful duties.
The offence carries a potential penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The man is also being investigated under Section 292 of the same code for possession of obscene material, an offence punishable by up to three years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.
A remand application was filed on May 4 to allow further investigation.
Police said members of the public who witnessed the incident are being called in to assist with inquiries.
