BAU: A 23-year-old man with disabilities (OKU), was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal electrical wiring from a building in Golden Square here earlier this week.

Bau police chief Acting Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the suspect was detained at the Bau police station compound at about 7.30pm on Thursday (Apr 16) after he voluntarily surrendered.

He said the suspect had earlier attempted to cut wiring at the main switch area of a new building in Golden Square after allegedly losing money in online gambling.

“While attempting to cut the wire, the suspect was confronted by a man, prompting him to flee into a nearby bush area,” he said in a statement.

After hiding for about an hour, the suspect walked to the Bau town bus stop and boarded a bus to Kuching, where he stayed for three days at a playground area in BDC.

He later went to his father’s quarters at Jalan Arang and confessed to the incident before being brought to the Bau police station to surrender.

Police said the suspect has a prior record involving drug-related offences and had previously been convicted.

No items were seized during the arrest.

The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code, and the suspect is expected to be remanded for further investigation.
