DALAT: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) has launched the Organic Fertiliser Processing and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Breeding Farm in Dalat, a collaborative initiative aimed at strengthening rural development through innovation, environmental restoration, and community empowerment.

The initiative introduces a community-based circular economy model that transforms organic waste into valuable resources while creating new local economic opportunities.

At its core is the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), an insect species capable of converting organic waste into nutrient-rich biomass used for organic fertiliser and animal feed.

Through this process, materials such as water hyacinth from Sungai Batang Oya, food waste from schools and restaurants, and sago processing residues are repurposed into useful products, reducing waste while promoting resource efficiency.

The removal of invasive water hyacinth is also expected to improve river conditions and restore the ecological balance of Sungai Batang Oya.

During the Organic Fertiliser Processing and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Breeding Farm launching ceremony at the Welfare Complex Hall on Friday (June 19), PETRONAS Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu said the initiative accelerates waste decomposition from months to just a few days, enabling more efficient and systematic waste management.

More importantly, she said, the programme extends beyond technical solutions by generating new income opportunities, particularly for rural communities, while supporting inclusive and resilient local economic development.

“At the same time, this effort contributes to environmental conservation by reducing organic waste and restoring the river ecosystem, an important step in supporting net-zero carbon emissions aspirations and ensuring sustainability for future generations.

“This initiative also strengthens human capital development through technology transfer and knowledge sharing,” she added.

“Through continuous training and guidance, local communities are empowered with new skills and equipped to apply them in generating income and improving their quality of life.”

The collaboration between PETRONAS and the Sarawak government underscores a shared commitment to empowering communities, strengthening environmental stewardship, and supporting the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 towards a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Sarawak.
