SIBU: The Rejang Park Volleyball Stadium will soon have an LED panel screen, thanks to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, who has set aside RM50,000 for the project from his minor rural project (MRP) grant.
According to Chieng, as one of the venues for the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA), the LED panel screen will provide a better experience for the audience to watch tournaments.
“The screen, which is 6.4 metres wide and 3.538 metres high, can broadcast the match live. This will give a better experience and feeling to the spectators when watching matches. They will be able to see the matches more clearly and in greater detail.
“It is the first (volleyball stadium) in Malaysia equipped with such a facility, and I hope the residents of Sibu will support our SUKMA team not only in volleyball but also in badminton and football,” he said when met by reporters during the MRP grant presentation at the Volleyball Stadium here yesterday (June 12).
Chieng said the Sarawak men’s and women’s SUKMA volleyball teams are training diligently to ensure that the gold medals will be theirs.
“The teams are not only training in Malaysia but also undergoing training abroad in Taiwan and Thailand,” he added.
Additionally, he said that as an assemblyman, he wants to help them in their preparations for SUKMA, especially in ensuring that the sports facilities in Bukit Assek are in good condition.
Meanwhile, Sibu Volleyball Association chairman Datuk Moh Wung Ming said the Sarawak volleyball squad will compete in two more tournaments to fine-tune their preparations ahead of their quest to strike gold at the SUKMA.
The first tournament will be the Datuk Bandar Cup Win Streak Volleyball Invitational Championship Malaysia 2024 in Johor on June 18-22, to be participated by the men’s volleyball team.
“However, both teams will compete in the July 2-8 Sarawak Cup and teams from Australia, Philippines and Thailand will compete in the tournament while Indonesia and Taiwan have yet to confirm their participation,” he added.
In the previous SUKMA, the men’s volleyball team won the gold medal, while the women spikers took the bronze.
For this SUKMA, Sibu will be the location for volleyball, football, and badminton competitions.
The football matches will take place at Stadium Tun Zaidi Adruce, while the badminton events will be held at the Sibu Indoor Stadium.
