KUCHING: Sarawak boxing legend Sapok Biki has added another proud chapter to his decorated journey after being promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel in the Malaysian Army.

According to a Facebook post by Berita Tentera Darat Malaysia, the promotion was conferred during the Rank Conferment Ceremony held at Wisma Perwira TD in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur on May 20.

Sapok was among 24 officers elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as part of a wider promotion exercise involving 33 senior officers across various ranks within the Malaysian Army.

The ceremony also saw three officers promoted to Brigadier General and six to Colonel, alongside the presentation of the Pisau Tempur Pegawai Kanan Tentera Darat to five eligible officers.

The ranks were conferred by Army chief General Datuk Azhan Md Othman, assisted by Deputy Chief of the Army Lieutenant General Datuk Mohamad Suria Mohamad Saad.

For Sarawak sports, however, Sapok’s name carries significance far beyond military service.

Born in Simunjan, Sapok rose from humble beginnings to become one of Malaysia’s most respected boxing figures after capturing gold in the light flyweight category at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur – a feat no Malaysian boxer has replicated since.

His victory over Kenya’s Moses Kinyua in front of home supporters remains one of the country’s most iconic boxing moments.

Before that historic triumph, Sapok had already represented Malaysia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, becoming among the few Sarawakian athletes to compete at the world’s biggest sporting stage.

His resume also includes four SEA Games appearances, where he consistently delivered podium finishes against some of Southeast Asia’s strongest fighters from Thailand and Indonesia.

Widely admired for his relentless fighting spirit and discipline inside the ring, Sapok became a symbol of determination for many young Sarawakian athletes during the peak of his career.

Following retirement from competitive boxing, he continued contributing towards Sarawak sports through coaching and grassroots athlete development.

In 2021, he established the Sapok Biki Boxing Development Center in Kota Samarahan under the Sarawak State Boxing Association (SABA), where he continues nurturing young boxing talents and helping sustain the state’s proud combat sports tradition.

To many within the fraternity of Sarawak sports, Sapok’s latest military promotion stands as another fitting recognition for an athlete whose impact stretches well beyond medals and achievements alone.
