KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak’s push to become a green hydrogen hub in Southeast Asia received a boost with federal-state cooperation in key areas including skills development and innovation.
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the collaboration will focus on talent development, standard and regulatory alignment, as well as joint research and development (R&D) and technology transfer.
“The federal government and the Sarawak government are committed to implementing cooperation in three key areas, namely talent development, standard and regulatory alignment as well as joint research and development with technology transfer,” he in a statement reported by TVS on Monday (July 13) .
He was responding to a supplementary question from Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee on the government’s strategy to accelerate the commercialisation of local research and technology transfer to strengthen Sarawak’s position as a green hydrogen hub.
He added that the approach would support the development of a more comprehensive national hydrogen ecosystem while reducing reliance on foreign technology by strengthening local capabilities.
He also said that the government is committed to ensuring the hydrogen industry is developed inclusively to secure long-term benefits for the country’s economy.
“Our main strategy is to translate local research findings into commercial products to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign technology.”
