KUCHING: Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) is stepping up its efforts to gain recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) with a self-assessment workshop to be held here from March 4 to 6.

The Sarawak Forestry Department said in a statement today that the workshop is a crucial step in ensuring that all UNESCO-set criteria are met ahead of the official evaluation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

“This workshop brings together agencies overseeing SDGp, along with its advisors to assess the current status of the geopark, and identify areas that require strengthening to meet UNESCO’s standards.

“Among the key focus areas are geological conservation, environmental sustainability, community empowerment, sustainable economic development, as well as promotion and geopark-related education,” the statement read.

Sarawak Forestry Director, Datuk Hamden Mohammad, said continuous coordination among all stakeholders is vital for SDGp’s success in achieving global recognition.

“Achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status will not only elevate Sarawak’s profile as a world-class geopark tourism destination, but also bring economic and social benefits to the local communities,” he said in the same statement.

On October 7 last year, Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced that SDGp is set to achieve UGGp status by 2026.

Efforts are currently underway to fulfill the necessary criteria and secure approval from UNESCO. – BERNAMA
