SIBU: The severity of the flooding in Bintulu came as a shock, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch chairman, Councillor Wong Ching Yong.
“I express my deepest sympathy to them. We never expected Bintulu to flood. Frankly speaking, I never expected Bintulu to experience such severe flooding—this is truly shocking.
“I sincerely hope for good health and happiness this Chinese New Year, and I also hope that the government will provide the necessary disaster management assistance to those affected,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters at the SUPP Dudong and Sibu Jaya Service Centre’s Chinese New Year Celebration, held at their service centre today (Jan 31).
Meanwhile, Wong, who is also the deputy chairman of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), expressed his hope that the government would consider plans for road enlargement or the construction of a flyover from Farley Road up to Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kwong Kok.
“With the completion of Kong Yit Khim Road, this stretch will experience traffic congestion.
“At present, this may not be noticeable as Jalan Stabau is prone to flooding, so people tend to avoid using it.
“However, once the weather conditions improve, you will see the road starting to experience congestion,” he added.
Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.
