KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia-based Starwave Entertainment is developing a new original reality show, “The Apex”, as part of its strategy to strengthen the country’s presence in the global entertainment industry through original intellectual property (IP) and international collaborations.

In a recent statement, the Southeast Asia-based entertainment company said “The Apex” is a global combat sports reality competition that will feature amateur fighters from different countries competing for a championship title and an opportunity to gain international exposure.

Beyond the boxing challenges and elimination rounds, the series will also highlight the contestants’ personal journeys, sacrifices and resilience, offering audiences a closer look at the discipline and determination required to succeed in combat sports.

The winner will receive an attractive prize and greater exposure within the international combat sports industry.

Starwave Entertainment said it is currently in discussions to secure the involvement of a globally renowned boxer in the programme, with further details to be announced once negotiations are finalised.

Production is scheduled to take place in Malaysia, creating opportunities for local creative talents, production professionals and industry partners, while showcasing a Malaysian-developed entertainment IP to international audiences.

The company said the project will combine local production capabilities with the expertise of an international production team to deliver world-class production standards.

The international team includes creative director Bobby Kim, whose previous works include “Physical: 100” and “Culinary Class Wars”; producer and director Mark PD (Park Sangmin), known for “MAMA”, “Wonder Girls” and “SEVENTEEN Project”; visual effects producer Ritto Prabu, whose credits include “Dune: Part Two” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash”; and executive producer and creative director Asher Yeap, who specialises in reality and branded entertainment.

To support the development of “The Apex” and future entertainment projects, Starwave Entertainment said it is pursuing a fundraising initiative, with further announcements to be made in due course.

Founded in Southeast Asia, Starwave Entertainment focuses on developing original show formats, live experiences, celebrity collaborations and large-scale productions for regional and international markets.
