KUCHING: A family in Kampung Engkeroh, Serian, is receiving assistance from Hope Place Kuching after its sole breadwinner suffered a debilitating stroke.
Stanley Sandoi, 47, suffered a stroke earlier this year and is now recovering at home with his wife and four children.
In a statement on Thursday (Sep3), Hope Place said Stanley was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for two weeks after suffering the stroke in May.
Stanley said he was at hospital caring for his mother when he suddenly suffered a stroke, became unconscious and required emergency medical treatment.
He subsequently underwent two surgeries to remove blood clots and remains unable to walk, requiring a wheelchair to move around his home.
Before his illness, Stanley earned a living by doing odd jobs in his village, providing the family’s main source of income despite modest earnings.
His two older children, aged 18 and 19, are currently looking for employment, but limited opportunities in the small Serian village remain challenging.
At present, Stanley’s wife cares for him while also looking after their two younger children, aged eight and 15, who are still schooling.
Hope Place said Stanley was no longer bedridden and could eat solid food after stopping tube feeding, although he could only mumble when speaking.
His eldest child, only known as Requeline, 24, rents a room in MJC and works at a café, becoming the family’s only current financial contributor.
Requeline is also physically disabled and holds a disability card, making her contribution particularly challenging as she supports her family’s growing needs.
With several family members depending on limited income and Stanley requiring continued care, financial pressures have placed a heavy burden on the household.
Hope Place is currently assisting the family with basic food supplies and adult diapers, helping them manage Stanley’s daily needs during his recovery.
The family recently received encouraging news that Stanley’s social welfare aid application was approved, with RM500 monthly assistance expected to begin soon.
