SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth commends the recent successful crackdown by the Royal Malaysia Police on a drug trafficking syndicate, which resulted in the seizure of narcotics estimated at RM16.2 million, involving over 100 kilogrammes of illicit substances in the state.

In giving the accolade, its Youth Chief, Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie stated this significant enforcement action reflects the seriousness of the threat that the authorities are facing and their unrelentless commitment in safeguarding public safety.

“However, what is particularly alarming is the increasing sophistication in the packaging and distribution of these drugs, especially in liquid form, including the discovery of 1,281 vape cartridges suspected to contain liquid cannabis.

“This development poses a grave danger to our society, and more critically, to our younger generation. Of serious concern is the potential for such drug-laced substances to be infused into electronic vaping devices, which are widely accessible in the market today,” he said in a statement today (April 23).

On the issue of vaping in Sarawak, La, who is also the Chair of SUPP Bawang Assan Branch, said the State Government pledges its full support for the ban on the sale of and using vape products.

At the federal level, he said the Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, has also confirmed that Malaysia is moving towards a nationwide ban on vaping.

While this is a step in the right direction, he urged greater urgency in prioritising this matter, as implementation will inevitably take time alongside ongoing enforcement efforts against drug syndicates.

The emergence of drug-laced vapes represents a serious and evolving threat, he said, adding that these devices can cause severe and long-term harm, particularly to young users who may be unaware of the risks.

He stressed that immediate and decisive action is needed to protect the future generation.

He called on the lawmakers to accelerate policy implementation, strengthening enforcement, and intensifying awareness campaigns in schools and communities to educate youths on the dangers of vaping and drug abuse.

“SUPP Youth remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at combating drug abuse and protecting the wellbeing of our society,” Lau added.
