KUCHING: Two of Kuching’s traditional Chinese opera groups came together for the first time to celebrate their shared cultural traditions through a joint Teochew and Hokkien opera performance that drew a packed audience to Carpenter Street.
The Kuching Teochew Association and Teo Khiaw Club collaborated with the Kuching Yi Sheng Min Hokkien Opera Society to stage the inaugural performance at the Yangchun Stage on July 18, attracting opera enthusiasts, members of the public and foreign tourists.
“Presenting the two opera forms on the same stage represented more than an artistic collaboration. It was a meaningful cultural exchange that reflected a shared commitment to preserving and promoting traditional Chinese heritage,” the organisers said in a statement.
The programme opened with a 40 minute performance by the Kuching Teo Khiaw Club’s Teochew Music Orchestra, featuring six Teochew opera and folk music pieces, including Auspicious and Prosperous, Peach Blossom Crossing, Community Celebration, High Mountains and Flowing Water, Hometown Feelings, Three Praises and Celebrating Victory.
The evening continued with a 50 minute presentation of The Fox Fairy’s Repayment of Kindness by the Kuching Yi Sheng Min Hokkien Opera Troupe, whose singing, acting and stage performance earned repeated applause from the audience.
According to the statement, although Teochew Opera and Hokkien Opera originated from different regions, both are deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture and embody the unique dialects, customs and cultural identity passed down through generations.
Traditional Chinese opera combines dialects, music, literature, dance, aesthetics and folk traditions, making it an enduring symbol of Chinese cultural identity and a treasured art form passed down through generations.
“Preserving traditional Chinese culture while embracing innovation is a shared responsibility. We hope more young people will appreciate and carry forward this heritage.
“This inaugural collaboration marks a new milestone for traditional Chinese opera in Kuching and gives fresh momentum to preserving the art form for future generations.”
