MIRI: Traffic police here have arrested three locals for allegedly riding their motorcycles dangerously in an operation dubbed ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ on Gawai eve (May 31).
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, which ran from 11 pm to 3 am, was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division around Miri city and Jalan Miri-Bypass.
“The suspects, aged between 16, 21 and 25, were taken into custody for further actions.
“The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine up to RM10,000, imprisonment up to five years and licence disqualification up to five years,” he said.
In addition, police also confiscated 11 motorcycles under Section 60 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1978 for various offences.
Mohd Farhan added that throughout the operation, the team had inspected 22 men and issued a total of 67 traffic summonses against the motorists for various offenses.
Among the offenses include riding without a license, possessing expired license, illegal structural and exhaust modifications, missing side mirrors and license plates, use of fancy license plates, failure to display ‘P’ stickers, and faulty braking systems.

“Such operations will continue from time to time. Motorcyclists are reminded to ride responsibly, avoid illegal street racing, and refrain from making unlawful modifications to their motorcycles,” he said.
