KOTA SAMARAHAN: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes are gaining attention among youths as a pathway to employment, particularly in the palm oil plantation sector.

Muhd Shahrulnizam Shahdon

Muhd Shahrulnizam Shahdon, 24, from Mukah, said the programme provides immediate job opportunities upon completion. He shared that besides harvesting skills, he also learned various aspects of plantation management, including fertiliser and pesticide application.

“This programme is very good because after completing the training, we can directly secure a job. It also helps those without formal certificates to find employment and reduces unemployment.”

He encouraged individuals who are less academically inclined to consider joining TVET programmes, as they offer practical skills and reasonable salaries.

Hatta Salas Ninting

Meanwhile, Hatta Salas Ninting, 24, from Engkilili, said he joined the harvesting specialist programme and underwent three months of training before being offered a job in the same field.

“During the training, I learned skills such as harvesting palm oil fruits and pruning. This programme is very helpful because it is quite difficult to find a job nowadays, but through this programme, we are given direct employment opportunities.”

He added that the training also provided real working experience and helped to boost his confidence.

Timotheus Tingang Pahang

For Timotheus Tingang Pahang, 19, from Miri, the programme served as a platform to enhance his skills in plantation work.

“I learned how to cut fronds, harvest fruits, and arrange them properly during the training period. After this, I plan to work first to gain experience before managing my own plantation in the future.”

All three participants expressed their intention to begin their careers with SD Guthrie after completing the programme, highlighting the effectiveness of TVET initiatives in improving youth employability and creating sustainable career pathways.
