KUCHING: Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, has been hailed as a unifying figure for Sarawak’s diverse communities.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg further described him as a fatherly leader who brings people of all faiths and backgrounds together.
Abang Johari said Wan Junaidi is not just a Head of State but a symbol of unity for Sarawak’s multicultural and multi-religious society.
“Wan Junaidi is an exemplary unifying figure – a Governor who is a fatherly figure to all the people of Sarawak, regardless of their race and religion,” he said.
He said this in his speech, read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at a multi-religious thanksgiving event in conjunction with Wan Junaidi’s 79th birthday at Imperial Hotel last night (Friday).
Wan Junaidi’s inclusivity, the Premier added, is reflected in his consistent engagement with religious leaders and ordinary citizens alike.
“Just days after his appointment as the eighth Head of State on January 7, 2024, Wan Junaidi hosted a dinner inviting all heads of religions in the State.
“He continued this practice by organising events such as the Majlis Bersungkei at the Astana and Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses with representatives from various faith groups.
“Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, have often visited markets and enjoyed breakfasts at Chinese kopitiams to mingle with ordinary citizens. The feedback from the people on his kindness is overwhelmingly positive,” Abang Johari added.
Abang Johari also highlighted the significance of the interfaith thanksgiving dinner, attended by representatives from various religious communities under the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).
“As we gather here, it is truly heartwarming to see people from different races, backgrounds and religions sharing a meal together.
“This is not just a thanksgiving ceremony; it’s a celebration of our shared humanity and our collective aspiration for a more harmonious Sarawak,” he said.
