MIRI: Gawai Dayak is a few days away and despite the conditional movement control order (CMCO), the festive mood is in the air.
Usually, close family and friends would take the opportunity for merrymaking, but this year’s scenario would be slightly different.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reminded Sarawakians that ngabang (house-to-house visiting) is not allowed during Gawai in order to curb the spread of the virus.
For housewife Teresa Simon, she worked on improving her baking skills during the CMCO period.
“Ever since the CMCO, I began to enjoy baking cookies and cakes — especially traditional Gawai kuih,” she said.
She added that although the baking process can be complicated, the outcome eventually turned out to be satisfactory.
Teresa revealed that for this year’s Gawai, she’s preparing at least five baked treats, as well as orders she took from close friends.
“Usually, I take orders in advance for cakes for Gawai. Like today, I just finished baking a kek belacan for one of my customers,” she said.
Among the traditional cakes she has also baked included kuih sarang semut and penganan.
