MIRI: The new extension block of Miri Hospital is expected to be fully operational by August this year, said Deputy Health Minister, Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

“The new hospital building that will be operational in August this year will be able to increase the number of beds and units,” Lukanisman said during the launch of the Tuberculosis (TB) awareness programme at Jalan Merbau Health Clinic today (June 15).

This expansion will boost the hospital’s capacity significantly, adding advanced medical treatments for the area.

The extension is currently under construction and will introduce 328 new beds, raising the total to 667.
Additionally, it will add 1,000 new parking spaces to alleviate the current parking challenges for visitors and staff.

Lukanisman also addressed the ongoing staff and specialist shortage in Sarawak’s healthcare sector, urging local youths to pursue careers in medicine.

“I encourage the children of Sarawak to be interested in becoming doctors and medical specialists in order to be able to provide medical services in Sarawak to deal with the problem of lack of specialists,” he urged.

The completion of this extension is seen as vital for reducing the strain on existing medical infrastructure.
