MIRI: This morning, motorists travelling along the coastal road near Lutong Beach were confronted with a startling sight: extensive sea debris, including logs, scattered across the roadside.

The incident follows a night of intense tidal activity.

Since Saturday night, king tides and strong waves have wreaked havoc along the Lutong coast. The intense natural forces caused seawater, logs, sand and other debris to be carried inland, depositing them on the coastal road and surrounding areas.

The high tidal waves, which began their assault on the beach last night, have created a hazardous situation for drivers in the area.

Many motorists, who typically traverse the scenic route, were taken aback by the volume of debris on the road this morning.

Drivers had to exercise extreme caution as they navigated through the scattered logs and debris, highlighting the immediate and disruptive impact of the tidal forces.

The coastal disruption also led to flooding in several low-lying nearby areas, compounding the challenges faced by the local community.

Despite the completion of a 100-metre gabion wall project by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Miri in 2021, designed to protect Lutong Beach from such events, the strength of the king tide appears to have surpassed the wall’s defences.
