KAPIT: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has advised all residents and road users in areas affected by landslides here to take precautionary measures for their own safety.

“I urge residents to follow the instructions of the authorities on duty,” he said in his Facebook post today (Jan 30).

Nanta, who is also the Kapit MP, said he is aware of the landslide incident that occurred on Jalan Song/Sipan-Temalat, which resulted in a temporary closure.

He explained that based on initial information, the incident is believed to have been caused by continuous heavy rainfall since yesterday.

“According to information from the Kapit Public Works Department (PWD), the temporary closure was made to allow PWD to implement a diversion to open a route for light vehicles.

“However, the route for heavy vehicles will not be permitted as the land structure at the incident site is unstable and unsafe,” he said.

He added that Kapit Resident Elvis Didit has also visited the site alongside Katibas assemblyman Lidam Asan and Kapit District Officer Harry Bruce to inspect the affected road section.

Nanta said landslides have also been reported in several other locations across the Kapit and Belaga districts.

“Among the affected areas are near the junction to the TV and Radio Transmitter Tower and Lorong 1, Taman Bian Hua, Kapit District, as well as Kilometer 34, Menjawah – Belaga Road and Bakun – Belaga Road, between Uma Badeng Dangan / Bakun, Belaga District,” he said.

He said the Kapit Disaster Management Committee has also been instructed to closely monitor the situation across the entire Kapit District in anticipation of any further developments due to the current bad weather.

“The Belaga Disaster Management Committee has also taken action to clear the affected routes to allow road users to pass through the areas.

“At the same time, PWD has placed appropriate signboards at the incident sites,” he said.
