THE increase in the number of State Legislative Assembly seats will enable more accurate and effective distribution of development resources, helping to bridge the longstanding gap between urban and rural communities.

Royston Valentine (GPS-Tellian) said constituencies can be divided into more focused and specific polling districts, allowing elected representatives to manage and channel development resources according to the unique needs of each area, especially the rural regions.

“This will directly reduce the development gap between urban and rural areas and ensure a more balanced distribution of socio-economic benefits,” he said.

He stressed that the growing population and the implementation of automatic voter registration under Undi18 have increased demands on elected representatives.

“More assembly members mean large and challenging constituencies can be managed more effectively, ensuring closer, more efficient service to the people,” he explained.

Valentine also highlighted that the move would strengthen social and political unity among Sarawak’s multiracial communities, supporting the national unity agenda.

“This increase will enhance cohesion and social integration, fostering harmony and tolerance essential for continued political stability,” he said.

He argued that expanding the number of assembly members would ensure that people’s voices are better represented at the legislative level, reinforcing democratic governance and political stability.

“With more specific constituencies, the government can focus closely on local development and issues, improving voter satisfaction,” he added.

He linked the proposal to Sarawak’s strategic ambitions under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), pointing out that effective and inclusive representation would accelerate key development programmes across the state.

“A stronger legislative foundation will enhance governance and oversight, ensuring high-impact outcomes,” he said.

Valentine also pointed out that additional seats would enable fairer redelineation of electoral boundaries, better election management, and improved access to basic infrastructure in remote areas.

“This will allow infrastructure such as roads, utilities and social facilities to be adapted to local conditions, opening economic opportunities and improving quality of life,” he emphasised.
