MUKAH: A foreign couple’s secret drug run came to a screeching halt when police discovered over 60g of methamphetamine inside their SUV along Jalan Mukah-Selangau yesterday (Aug 5).

The couple, aged 33 and 47, were arrested by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at around 11.20 am, following intelligence gathering and surveillance.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said officers swooped in on a white Toyota Fortuner that was parked in front of a premises near Ulu Bayan junction.

“Inspections led to the discovery of 22 plastic packets containing crystalline substances suspected to be methamphetamine, weighing 63.5g.

“The drugs were hidden inside a black bag belonging to the male suspect, who was the driver,” he said.

Police also seized the SUV, cash, and several pieces of jewellery — all of which amounted to an estimated seizure value of RM121,000.

Rizal added that the couple is believed to be actively operating as drug distributors in Mukah, Jalan Mukah-Selangau, and Ulu Balingian.

Both suspects tested negative for drugs, but will be remanded to facilitate investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Upon conviction, the offence carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.

He urged members of the public with information on drug activities in Mukah or Selangau to contact Mukah IPD at 084-871222 or report to the nearest police station.
