KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will be organising the Mayor’s Cup Debate in two versions – Bahasa Malaysia and English – starting next year.
DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the initiative is aimed at nurturing future leaders among the younger generation, particularly students, while also strengthening their communication and critical thinking skills.
“The organisation of the Mayor’s Cup Premier Debate is expected to produce a young generation who can emerge as capable leaders and serve as catalysts for national development,” he said during the Mayor’s Cup Premier Debate 2025 held here recently.
He added that another programme, the Mayor’s Cup Premier Oratory Competition, will also be introduced in 2026 as an important platform to uncover new talents, instil confidence, and empower youths intellectually.
“These programmes should become an annual agenda that not only elevates the status of language and public speaking culture but also sharpens communication skills, debating confidence, and critical thinking among our younger generation,” Hilmy stressed.
The three-day Mayor’s Cup Premier Debate 2025 saw 12 secondary schools competing on one stage, showcasing strong arguments and critical ideas.
Yayasan Sarawak International School emerged champion, bringing home RM1,000 in cash, the Mayor’s Cup, a challenge trophy and a plaque.
