Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort has unveiled its latest attraction – a Bird Park featuring 20 species of feathered wonders from Borneo and beyond. The family-friendly eco-tourism spot in Tarat, Serian, is fast becoming a must-visit destination for bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and holidaymakers alike.

PARENTS now have a fresh reason to bring their children to Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort (BEFR) – the opening of its brand-new Bird Park.

The agro-eco tourism destination in Tarat, Serian, has introduced this latest attraction to complement its wide range of family-friendly offerings.

According to BEFR’s Animal Centre Section Head and Animal Trainer, Anissa Senah Dayang, the Bird Park promises a unique and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

“We are committed to giving visitors, especially children, an unforgettable time at BEFR. With the Bird Park, we hope to bring even more joy and excitement to their trip,” she said.

The park is home to 20 species of birds, along with one rare avian mammal, sourced from both within Borneo and abroad.

“Some of our birds are from China, while others are native to Borneo’s rich ecosystems,” Anissa explained.

Open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the Bird Park offers guided tours conducted by BEFR’s dedicated staff, ensuring that visitors not only enjoy the sights but also gain a deeper understanding of the feathered residents.

Anissa believes the park is an ideal outing spot, particularly during school holidays and weekends, when families are looking for wholesome activities to enjoy together.

BEFR itself is already known for hosting the largest outdoor aviary in Sarawak, alongside other attractions such as a mini animal park, an empurau fish farm, a mini theme park, and children’s play areas.

Since its launch, the Bird Park has seen encouraging visitor numbers, welcoming not just locals from Kuching and Serian, but also travellers from across Sarawak – including Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang – as well as holidaymakers from Peninsular Malaysia.

“We honestly didn’t expect such overwhelming support,” Anissa admitted. “But this shows the positive response to our efforts in offering something different at BEFR.”

Visitors are also treated to educational briefings about the birds, adding value to their experience.

“Here, people don’t just see the birds up close – they learn about their nature and behaviour in a meaningful way,” Anissa said.

From colourful peacocks and curious ostriches to exotic species that never fail to capture attention, the Bird Park is quickly becoming a must-visit stop for bird lovers and family travellers alike.

With its lively atmosphere and growing popularity, BEFR’s Bird Park is set to soar as one of Sarawak’s most exciting eco-tourism destinations.

Besides the new attraction, BEFR offers far more than just its Bird Park. Visitors can explore the Animal and Reptile Park, or mini zoo, which houses a variety of mammals and reptiles that can be observed and, in some cases, interacted with.

BEFR is also recognised as a key centre for the prized freshwater empurau fish, with a hatchery and broodstock of adult empurau operating under MyGAP certification. Its work extends beyond conservation and research, involving the production of fish fries as well as collaborations with local contract farmers and rural villages.

For those interested in agriculture, the resort features dedicated areas such as an aquaponics farm, fertigation plots, orchards and organic fruit and vegetable gardens, offering both scenic walks and educational experiences.

Accommodation is equally diverse, ranging from lake-view chalets and longhouse-style guestrooms to classic rooms, complemented by a range of communal amenities, including restaurants serving local cuisine and empurau dishes, coffee shops, barbecue zones, a souvenir shop, lookout towers and buggy rides to help guests navigate the expansive grounds.

To complete the family-friendly offerings, a mini water theme park with pools, waterfalls, spa facilities and rental shops for floats and water toys provides a refreshing spot for both relaxation and play.
