KUCHING: A new urban art initiative known as the “Lucky Kuching” project has been launched, bringing a fresh burst of colour and creativity to the city’s streets.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian described the project as a symbolic and joyful addition to Kuching’s cultural landscape — inspired by the world-famous “Buddy Bear” sculptures in Berlin, Germany.
“Just like Berlin, which has its Buddy Bear sculptural art project, Kuching now has our own Lucky Kuching.
“This initiative is meaningful and symbolic for our city,” he said in his Facebook post.
The project, spearheaded by Borneo Restu managing director, Ian Lee, features a series of cat statues designed to represent good fortune, positivity, and harmony.
“The name Lucky Kuching reflects our hopes to bring good fortune, harmony and optimism to the people of Kuching,” Dr Sim added.
The statues will soon be placed at various locations throughout the city, forming the “Lucky Kuching Trail.”
The trail aims to encourage locals and tourists to explore different parts of Kuching, recently recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
Each statue is designed to be an interactive art piece — a photogenic landmark that celebrates Kuching’s unique identity as the “City of Unity.”
He also encouraged members of the public to take photos with the statues and share them on social media, tagging @lucky.kuching.trail on Facebook or @lucky.kuching on Instagram, along with the hashtags #LuckyKuchingTrail and #LuckyKuching.
