KUCHING: Community-based health initiatives remain an important pillar in promoting active ageing and strengthening social cohesion, particularly among senior citizens, in line with Sarawak’s inclusive and people-centric development agenda.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian commended associations such as the Mazhong Recreation Association for its sustained contribution to community development.
He said such long-term commitment and voluntary service demonstrates the indispensable role played by community organisations in supporting healthy lifestyles and strengthening community engagement.
“Health does not begin in hospitals, but within communities and through good daily habits,” he said during the 2026 New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner organised by the association recently.
His text of speech was read out by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
The Mazhong Recreation Association currently has approximately 350 members and continues to provide free exercise instruction at the Malaysia-China Friendship Park and the Saradise Edge area.
Dr. Sim noted that when senior citizens have access to suitable platforms for physical activity, stable social networks and environments where they are respected and valued, the benefits extend beyond individuals to society as a whole.
He also stressed that advancing age should not be regarded as a limitation, noting that senior citizens remain a valuable asset whose experience and knowledge can continue to contribute meaningfully to Sarawak’s development when opportunities for participation remain accessible.
Touching on government initiatives, he said the Sarawak Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB), introduced in August 2024, reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the welfare of senior citizens.
“The scheme provides eligible Sarawak citizens aged 60 and above with an annual outpatient medical benefit of RM500 to improve access to affordable healthcare services,” he added.
He added that the initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that no segment of society is left behind and that the benefits of progress are shared equitably.
