KOTA SAMARAHAN: Some 400 secondary school students were given greater awareness of the dangers and consequences of bullying through the “Satu Suara Menentang Buli” programme held at SMK Hajah Laila Taib, Asajaya.
The programme, organised by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) under its Community Friendly City Initiative (CFCI), was held in collaboration with the Sarawak Education Department, Samarahan District Education Office and SMK Hajah Laila Taib on Wednesday (Aug 26).
It involved students from Forms One to Four and was aimed at raising awareness of bullying in schools while encouraging students to play an active role in creating a safer environment.
Among the programme highlights was a talk titled “Satu Suara Menentang Buli: Membina Sekolah Sejahtera” delivered by Dr Abang Syukri Abang Muis from the Sarawak Education Department.
His session highlighted the importance of collective efforts among the school community to prevent and address bullying while fostering a safe, harmonious and conducive learning environment.
A second talk was delivered by Sergeant Major Annason George Bunti of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), focusing on the consequences of bullying, its impact on victims and the action that can be taken against perpetrators.
Students were told that bullying could result in physical injuries, emotional and psychological distress, loss of self-confidence, fear of attending school and declining academic performance.
Perpetrators, meanwhile, could face disciplinary measures as well as legal action depending on the offence committed.
Students were also reminded not to remain silent or become passive bystanders when witnessing bullying.
They were encouraged to immediately report any bullying incident to teachers, parents or the relevant authorities so appropriate action could be taken.
Through the programme, organisers hope to reinforce the message that bullying should neither be regarded as part of school culture nor normalised, with every member of the school community having a role in creating a safe, caring, inclusive and bullying-free environment.
