MERADONG: Police have intensified their crackdown on drug abuse with the arrest of a 52-year-old man during a late-night operation in Bintangor.
The suspect was detained at about 9.30 pm the night before last (Feb 8) by a team from the Meradong Police Headquarters (IPD) during Ops Tapis conducted in the area.
Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said urine tests revealed the man tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“The arrest was part of a routine check conducted to curb drug abuse in the district,” he said in a statement.
He added that preliminary checks showed the suspect had no prior criminal or drug records.
“The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
“If convicted, the man could be fined up to RM5,000, imprisoned for up to two years, or both,” he said.
Tansli stressed that the Meradong IPD takes drug offenses seriously and will not compromise on any form of illegal substance abuse.
He also urged the public to provide information on drug activities in the district to help authorities combat the problem.
