SIBU: A 31-year-old man, Wellington Tukau from Nanga Ngemah, Kanowit, was today sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here for housebreaking and theft.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi handed down the sentence after Tukau pleaded guilty to the charge, which was explained to him through an interpreter.
He understood the implications and consequences of his guilty plea.
According to the case, on Feb 23 at around 6.30 am, Tukau broke into Borneo Fresh Pork shop in Ulu Sungai Merah Town District and stole RM1,000 from the cash register.
Acting on information received, a police team led by Inspector Muhammad Syahmi Zahar arrested him on Mar 3 at a location along Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.
The accused later led police to where the stolen goods were recovered at Jalan Ling Kai Cheng 14B.
The offence falls under Section 457(2) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
The case was prosecuted by DPP Haris Danial Mohamed Hassan, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
